Two Killed in Crash with Semi

Two Ocala women who had just left a bar died in a fiery head-on collision with a tractor-trailer. The women were driving on the wrong side of U.S. 301. The collision occurred just before 11 p.m. two miles south of Citra. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they saw flames shooting 20 to 25 feet in the air. The truck and the Jeep Wrangler the two women were in were engulfed in fire.

The truck driver escaped the cab without injuries. The women likely died on impact. The victims in the Jeep were identified as Glenda J. Cribbs, 46, and Tricia H. Colwell, 41, both of Ocala. Colwell was the driver.

A patron at On Top of the Hill Bar on U.S. 301 told officials the women had left the bar and turned south onto the northbound lanes of the four-lane highway. The witness jumped into his vehicle to try to stop the women. By the time he caught up with them they had already crashed. At least two vehicles traveling in the northbound lanes had to swerve to avoid the Jeep before the collision with the tractor-trailer occurred.

No charges will be filed against the truck driver who was shaken by the accident. By the time he saw the Jeep it was too late.

Woman Killed by Semi-Truck Wheel Near Ocala

A 30-year-old woman was killed when the car she was a passenger in was hit by a tire from a semi-truck. The accident happened early Monday morning on I-75 outside of Ocala. The car was headed north when the front wheels on a semi-truck heading south broke off the truck and came across the median. The semi-truck driver did not stop.

Lt. Mike Thomas said the truck driver stopped at a Petro Truck Stop to make repairs to the trailer, chaining up the front axle.
Witnesses at the store told investigators the truck driver said he was making a 5 a.m. delivery of potatoes to the Lakeland area and would have the trailer repaired after the delivery.

It is unknown if the driver knows he caused the accident. The Florida Highway Patrol is searching for the man and their investigation is ongoing.

If you are injured in a car accident you should know the basics about car insurance. Different automobile insurance coverage provides payment for different things. Generally a combination of insurance coverage from your automobile insurance policy, the automobile insurance policy of the vehicle you may have been riding in, or the automobile insurance policy for the other vehicle or vehicles involved in your accident may come in to play. The following list summarizes the potential insurance coverage's that may be involved in your case.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP): This insurance is required by Florida law to legally operate an automobile in the state of Florida. PIP is often referred to as "No-Fault" coverage because if you are injured in an automobile accident, PIP generally pays 80% of your medical expenses, up to $10,000, whether the accident was your fault or someone else's fault. PIP can also be used to pay your lost wages, prescription expenses and mileage to and from the doctor. You can purchase PIP coverage with a deductible or in amounts greater than $10,000.

Medical Payments (MedPay): This insurance supplements your PIP coverage. Generally MedPay coverage pays the 20% of your medical bills that PIP does not cover.

Bodily Injury Liability (BI): This insurance covers your legal liability for personal injury done to someone else as a result of the negligent operation of your automobile. If you are injured in an automobile accident and the accident was not your fault, this is the first place we look, on the other person's insurance policy, for insurance to cover your pain and suffering, unpaid medical expenses and lost wages. BI can be purchased in almost any amount from $10,000 and up.

Uninsured Motorist (UM): This insurance covers your pain and suffering, unpaid medical expenses and lost wages if the accident was not your fault and the person's BI coverage is not sufficient to cover all of your damages or the other person does not have BI coverage. UM coverage can be purchased in almost any amount from $10,000 and up.

Property Damage Liability (PD): This insurance covers your legal liability for property damage done to someone else's automobile as a result of an automobile collision. Florida law requires you to have this coverage in the amount of $10,000 in order to legally operate an automobile in the sate of Florida. If your vehicle was damaged in an automobile accident and the accident was not your fault, this insurance coverage should be available to pay for the damage done to your automobile.

Collision/Comprehensive: Collision insurance covers damage done to your automobile whether the accident was your fault or someone else's fault. Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your automobile resulting from fire, theft and other direct losses not excluded.

Dump Truck and Pickup Truck Involved in Collision

A pickup truck carrying 4 men was driving eastbound on U.S. 27 this morning when it collided with a dump truck. The front of the pickup went underneath the dump truck.

Ocala Fire-Rescue officials reported it took about 40 minutes to extricate the two men from the blue-and-white pickup's front seat using the Jaws of Life and other cutting tools.
Fire-Rescue spokesman Battalion Chief Wendell Rora said one of the men suffered head and lower body injuries. The other one is believe to have suffered a broken leg.

The two men in the back seat of the pickup were not seriously injured. The driver of the dump truck was unharmed. Police are still investigating the accident.

Two Men Injured in Car Crash

This was published in the Ocala Star Banner. Two area men suffered serious personal injury Tuesday morning after their pickup truck drove under the side of a large dump truck, crushing the cab and trapping the two front-seat occupants. Both men were airlifted to Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville. One man remained in critical condition for his personal injuries while the other man was in fair condition.

One of the men suffered head and lower body injuries. The other one is believed to have suffered a broken leg.

The accident happened when a tractor-trailer traveling south on Old Blitchton Road began to make a left onto U.S. 27. A pick-up truck with the two injured men was driving west toward I-75, carrying equipment in the bed and pulling a trailer when it ran into and under the dump truck. There was a stop sign on Old Blitchton Road at the intersection of U.S. 27, but it was not clear why the two vehicles collided. The accident is under investigation and no one was cited.

Florida Power & Light Truck Hits Minivan

A Florida Power & Light truck hit a minivan near the Golden Gates Estates Branch Library. It was by the intersection of 13th Street Northwest and Golden Gate Boulevard.

The accident occurred near a Golden Gate fire station and was observed by a fire captain. The driver of the minivan was rescued from the vehicle and than airlifted to a local hospital. It is unknown if the driver of the FPL truck was injured.
